Marrakech Collection Inspiration
Before arriving in Morocco I had visions of vibrant hues, and unusual color combinations; where patterns played against one another in the most interesting of ways – exciting and occasionally overwhelming the senses. I was not disappointed, though I was surprised to find something else. I found a side of the country that I had never thought about before, and it captured me. I was taken by the richness and beauty of the landscape – both within the city, as well as its outskirts —the lush, green mountains, the dry, red earth and deep, indigo night sky filled with millions of twinkling stars.
I drew inspiration from the artisans I met and the materials they worked with. Each time I walked through the souqs, I found myself to be more and more impressed by the craftsmanship that took place. As I walked down each narrow, winding street, I absorbed the vision surrounding me: woodworkers painstakingly carving away, metal crafters engraving just around the next corner, and, of course, hand embroidery being done by the women. I wanted to capture all of these images and replicate the colors found in the natural Marrakech landscape, while combining the organic qualities of the materials and techniques–walnut wood, antique brass, hand-braided and hand-stitched elements.
My hope is that with this collection, I can evoke the richness of the culture and landscape of a city that I have been so lucky to experience.
